Leaning Into the Light: The Hipstabird Series

The Hipstabird Series is a combination of my digital photos, emulsion slide transfers and my first image taken with the Hipstamatic App on the iPhone.  This body of work represents the relevance between one’s ordinary experiences, ones spirit and the source that connects us all.  I relish the contemplative, those things that nurture an introspective insight into who we are.  In this series the chicken and the seagull have become metaphors for this personal journey.  I use my photos as a palette, taking forms, colors and textures to create an entirely new image.  These layers have been building up since I discovered Photoshop in the late 1990’s.  Often, I take parts of previously flattened layers to begin a new piece.  So, in essence these images have many years of textures and history.  I began with just a simple concept…birds.  Embracing the symbolism of the chicken and the seagull, the images take on a life of their own, coming a reflection of my personal journey. 2011
