Teaching the Creative Process

CPACThe TreeI have three upcoming week long workshops available, one at Maine Media in Rockport https://www.mainemedia.edu/instructors/photo/karen-divine and two through Santa Fe Workshops http://santafeworkshops.com/instructors/98/.  The basics of shooting with the iPhone is easy and taught by many talented photographers both on-line and in classrooms.  My goal in a week long intensive is on the creative process of making an image, learning to allow for spontaneity and discovery.

As I read the book about Rabidranath Tagore in regards to his painting which didn’t begin until he was 67, he says “It is the element of unpredictability in art which seems to fascinate me strongly…while painting, the process adopted by me is quite the reverse of (writing).  First there is the hint of a line, then the line becomes a form.  The more pronounced the form becomes the clearer becomes the picture to my conception.  This creation of form is a source of wonder.  If I were a finished artist I would probably have a preconceived idea to be made into a picture. This is no doubt a rewarding experience.  But it is greater fun when the mind is seized upon by something outside of it, some surprise element which gradually evolves into an understandable shape.”

While we will  cover the single image as an important element for composition, color and content, my goal is to guide you to create with surprise, spontaneity and personal discovery.
